The Internet Economy in the UK – it’s big!

Saul Klein at The Guardian has looked at data on the internet economy within the UK. The headline is that internet-based business now accounts for around 8% of UK GDP.

To get a sense of just how significant the internet is to the UK, you only have to compare it with traditional industry. The internet sector has eclipsed construction, education and health, as a percentage of GDP. It already dwarfs utilities and communications and is only a couple of percentage points behind financial services.

It might be early to be thinking about a career, and it’s always risky to try and predict the future, but that’s a big slice of the economy which means demand for people with the right skills who understand how it all works.
